Diablo 3 fan art for the win. trying to practice the painting of textures. as a rule this piece is 100% painted. next thing ill prob try and make is something that fits in the same universe but is my own creation *Should also be noted that the top left of the image is a Diablo 3 screen shot and is property of Blizzard.

jealous. I love blizzard work. I need to start practicing painting textures. Do you use different types of brushes? Any bump maps?

It's frozan

Obviously the bottom two rings aren't done yet but the top looks good. The overall color values seem to match well. It seems like it could slip in there.

Like I said in the other thread, I love this piece, very nice texture painting. As Barry said, I'm curious as to how you go about your texturing, also do you mind if we get a look at your maps? Look forward to seeing more of your stuff.

@barry1685: thanks! yeah im really learning how to do this painting only but man im learning so much just from trying to do it the first time around. Blizzard is a beast at art and there team deserves to be loved :P for brushes im using a lot of the defaults and then some small textured grim ones. that's about it. ill point them out more in detail after the asset is done. there is a normal map on there but i put it really soft so that it just catches the shapes and light just enough to show you it has it. here is a grab of the high-poly.

@Seven: Hey! long time no see! yeah i decided to come to the forum that made me who i am today. so hello everyone! as you have guessed ive only got the top to a comfortable level. should have a updated tonight on the progress on the mid section.

@Sicarius: Thanks a lot. ill get those maps up when the entire texture is done for sure, for how sadly you will have to wait

Little lunch time sculpt. I don't do characters much but hey what ev. don't know where this thing came from in my mind but i want to say its like a techno bird thing... still kind of fun to just let the brain crap out whatever comes to mind. pretty happy with how it looks other then a bit blobby but hey 30 mins flat meh. hehe

Great work on the altar .. textures look very promising
And I like the bird thingy - looks a little like it could be from Mayan mythology

@Oddin: thank you, from the top view you can see the temporary specular shinning through a bit also.

@ilegacy: thanks little dirtier i think, still has a lot of color to it also
.
Decided to go all the way with color and just block in the basic color all around before continuing with the detail work. should have an update in the next day or two. deadlines at work are beating down nice and good

yeah man, you always need to return to the roots. I keep seeing you play WAW on steam and think about jumping in a game with you but I'm usually doing something at the time.

the high poly sculpt looks pretty good... the only thing that I can say about it is the stone closest to the camera on the lower level feels the best. I almost want to see a bit more of that through the rest of the piece. That's pretty much it though. Keep it up.

btw, where are you working now, still snowblind?

@Barry1685: Thanks still working on it today. hopefully i have it done soon. hard to have time to get things done.

@Seven: Yeah i agree about the bottom closest one looking the best. if you notice as it goes from the top to the bottom they get better. its like i was getting better from beginning to end haha.

Also yeah i am still at Snowblind, great studio for sure. We recently were acquired by Warner Brother Games. They also have Monolith: the team behind F.E.A.R WB Games treats us well.

Until I have the Diablo 3 asset to a shareable level i decided to show some basic blah things i drew up last night. nothing special just putting it up. The one on the right im sure you can guess what it is, the one on the left is like a overhead chandler where the light source is suspended over a dish that emits light through those pieces of cloth rather then glass shards. update on the D3 prop im hoping by tonight.

Awesome work. It looks like it also has a spec map on it from the top view? There's some highlights that aren't on the side view version. I look forward to seeing updates.

You've got a lot of strong, harsh blacks on it. When I look at the ref the cracks and seams where the bricks meet is lighter. It might be the texturing or it might be the shader, but as it is now I think in a daytime environment it would look way too dark. Also the lower rings of bricks look like the texture is just a flat colour and that the normal map is carrying all of the detail, whereas the top ring looks like a better balance.

@Dysfunctional: hey nice to see ya post in here. thanks i hope to finish this up. its more a learning experience then anything. next asset will prob go faster and look a ton better.

@Frump: Thanks for the small crits, i agree that they are pretty dark in there. i gave it some color and pushed it back some since, ill post that when i feel the center layer is up to par with the top layer. as for being really soft flat texture wise i basically have the top where i would like the rest to be. most rest of it is color block out.

also as a random thought it should be noted that i turned the power of the normal map down to 25% of what it usually is. to carry the Diablo 3 style of painterly textures you cant have the normal map be strong or else it over powers a lot of the texture.

Thanks guys.

Hey Frozan,

Thanks for the crit on my piece.

This pedestal looks excellent! I enjoy the color, and if you hadn't said so, I would have never been able to tell the Normal Map was dialed down- which makes it seem fabulous to me. I think I have to agree that the deepest cracks are very dark- but I don't see that as an absolutely terrible thing. The contrast makes it pop a bit more in my opinion, and from a painterly perspective, those contrasts need to come from somewhere since the dialed down normals aren't going to create them. Maybe just a slight balancing? I tend to enjoy intense contrast in my own work (even to my own detriment) so it appeals to me on that level.

Keep it up!

@Deep_Wulf: Thanks for the crits and comments. I agree that the dark areas are a bit to dark. i did push them up in color and brightness a bit.
