Man, I go away for 3 days, and this contest starts blowing up!
Easily one of the coolest looking, well thought out, bad ass models on here. The different elements are really helping the character design shine. And thanks for showing the exploded mesh, it's helped me understand the different elements going on with her design. I know this thing is gonna look great when it's done, so I'm keeping my eyes very firmly on this thread. Thanks for entering the contest, and giving me inspiration ![]() |

i think you could push the proportions a bit more. but before you jump to sculpting i got few crits. there are few proportion problems i see right away.
first, the knees are too far apart and makes her look less sexy. right now you are not getting that nice curve from the hip to the knees. second, the hands feel a tad bit small and in turn makes the arms a tad bit short. last but not least, the shape of the breasts are off. they look like she is using push up bra and has implants. they are too close to each other and too round/circular. |

Hey guys thanks for the comments and feedback. I’ve had fun working on her over the past 3 or so days and can’t wait to kick things into high gear! Luckily I didn’t have anything on my plate work wise so I’ve been able to commit a 100% of my time (14 hour days) to the character. As of right now I’ve got some contract work to attend to so I’ll only be able to work on her in the evenings, I figure four to five hours per day. Nonetheless I’ll have an update on Friday so stay tuned.
mr_ace: damn! slow down! awesome work as always, and a very nice start, look forward to seeing some sculpting action ThatDon: slow poke, hehe Ritorian: damn dude, you related to Speedy Gonzalez. nice mesh. happy sculpting kipiripi: Heyy How fast you are. yes its looking clean Marcus. Maph: Man, you really are flying through this one. Keep it up I'd say, she's looking very promising already! kessler: Marcus.... You are good. what a speedy fella you are. jocz: wow, you are fast, nice start Constantly being on deadline has helped with my speed. Although I’m feeling a bit burned out already, ! I just need to step away from her for a day then I'll be as good as new.DreameR: Good job Marcus. Something weird going on with her heels though... Everything else is looking decent. Nice balance and weight to her Yeah I’ve picked up on that and will adjust it in the sculpting phase. Styx: really cool mesh. Ô.o only one thing, arent the sai-dagger-thingys a bit to big? Your spot on with your observation, I was looking at the sai weapons themselves and didn’t reference a photo of someone holding them, duh . I’ll reduce the length of the scabbard a bit and the blades as well. Thanks for pointing that out.silent_fox: Very nice progress. Nice proportion but I think the fingers maybe a bit small/short. It's looking nice though. I look forward to see more of her. Yeah it’s on my list of things to tweak. Thanks for the feedback. Death Rattle: Nice work, that's a real good base mesh and i love how you redesigned her, really cool concept good luck! digitalinkmind: Good luck! She´s a really nice choice derricksong: good job so far, keep going with the progress, cant wait to see the next update... Thanks guys. Frump: Wow, huge update. I love the concept and if it looks this good as a blockout, can't wait to see the sculpt. Also it's cool seeing the exploded version. I don't really have anything constructive to say, just thought I'd show some support! Now I should get back to work so I can get as much done Sifer: Great base mesh Marcus and thanks for sharing the exploded view. I figured the explode mesh was worth showing so I’m glad you took something away from seeing it. Sir Rodriguez: love the way you're able to have such a clear view early on in your concepts and carry it on to your 3d models identically. i have a rough time doing that. i almost every time end up with something different then what i've sketched out. I just cant stick with the initial sketch (change my mind too often). much props to you. sweet base! Yeah I mean taking her from her original design and playing dress up wasn't too much of a chore. The hardest part was knowing what to add and where, mainly trying to strike a nice balance between the source design and the reboot! The modeling was pretty straight forward due to the simple nature of the design. All in all I'm happy with it and I can't see becoming bored with her during the comp, which is a plus when it comes to keeping motivated. eicronie: Nice Wait for sculpting.Arkhange: Nothing to say so far, just awesome work with quick execution ! I'm waiting to see more Should be fun, more to come soon! obi-one: Awesome base mesh, and it perfectly follow your concept. And so fast... I'm glad you think so. Trying to capture the feel of concept art is never easy but then again it helps when your the one that made the concept, . That said I plan on pushing the look in the sculpting phase so stay tuned.shadowmonkey: did you extract the clothing ect in ZB? Nope, too time consuming. I just modeled the outfit off of the base mesh that I made. This allows me to accurately place the elements on the mesh, which helps to cut back on the guess work when working in either Zbrush or Mudbox. I guess I'm just old school. Vahl: cool stuff Marcus, looking forward to see more super-heroines FTW !!! Hell yeah ! By the way I can't wait to see what you come up with for your character. I'm sure it's going to be smoking hot.ReplicA: Man, I go away for 3 days, and this contest starts blowing up! Easily one of the coolest looking, well thought out, bad ass models on here. Thanks for the comments, I wish you all the best as well. MM: i think you could push the proportions a bit more. but before you jump to sculpting i got few crits. there are few proportion problems i see right away. first, the knees are too far apart and makes her look less sexy. right now you are not getting that nice curve from the hip to the knees. second, the hands feel a tad bit small and in turn makes the arms a tad bit short. last but not least, the shape of the breasts are off. they look like she is using push up bra and has implants. they are too close to each other and too round/circular. Thanks for the insight Mash. Your right about the hands, I’ll make the necessary adjustments. As for the proportions, well there pretty much in line for what I was going for. I wanted to strike a balance between what’s real and what’s heroic in a comic book sense. For instance I took a few liberties with the legs and overall proportions but nothing that totally breaks the rules, I just bent them a bit. The characters stance your refereeing (knee distance) to is indeed correct but in a more realistic tone. I wanted her stance to have a slightly wider gape much like the female in the picture below. Mind you this stance could have been achieved in the rig/pose but I prefer to build it this way, as it’s easier for me to readjust back to a normal state. ![]() Also the breasts are indeed pushed together for obvious reasons, I wanted to accentuate her cup size and cleavage which would be impossible to do if they were sitting naturally. This is why I added an opening right at the cleavage point. Keep in mind I’m making a “fantastical” representation of a woman (see the model below), so having her breast defy convention isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just artistic license. That’s not to say that real breast aren’t sexy in their natural state, they’re just not appropriate for the vision of the model I’m making. ![]()

even in that stance, your photo reference has her knees closer to each other than in your model.
as for the breasts, i understand the cleavage logic but both of the breasts should not be pointing straight forward because the rib cage is not flat. and the shape of the breast should not be that round as in your model unless they are implants. they have more of a water droplet shape with the upper part of the breast somewhat like a hershey's kiss candy. i hope this makes sense ![]() for the legs, i took your photo ref from above, fixed the perspective and just outlined the silhoutte. as you can see the knees dont line up and more importantly in the outline you can see than nice curve from the upper thigh to the knee. btw, this curve is universal and is one of the key features that make female legs beautiful i think ![]() ![]() Last edited by MM : 07-22-2009 at 08:08 PM. |

Lol at the Hershey's kiss analogy. I never quite understood the attraction in comic book chicks having breast's the size of basketballs but to each there own =/. I agree with MM about the legs, standing like that would be putting a strain around her knees, kind of like how some manikins are. This piece is already looking wicked tho and so quick too so im sure this will turn out awesome! =)

Hey Guys, I made some headway with this bad girl and worked on the face, body and some of the cloth bits. I also scaled down the Sai weapons and adjusted the hands and legs. I’ll continue to make other adjustments along the way as needed. So far this is moving along pretty smoothly and I’m happy with the results so far. Anyways I should have the high poly work done by Saturday, so I’ll post an update then. Feel free to chime in, thanks!

Thanks for the feedback and the paint over. I'll make some key adjustments along the way and perhaps in the low poly stage. As for the breasts, well you got me, they are indeed inspired by and modeled off of implants. All kidding aside I have photo reference of women with their breasts in the same position in similar outfits. Support bras and augmentation can give this exact look. I'm also familiar with the curve in the legs you mentioned and it's been added in the sculpt update. The knees will be adjusted in the rig. Styx: i found this site with a replic of the sais from the movie elektra Thanks for the reference Styx, it was a big help in getting the scale in place.
